Weather Station At High Point On Palomar Mountain
Brad Eells and others have restored the High Point fire lookout tower on Palomar Mountain and it is intermittently staffed by volunteers.  Brad had this to say about their new automated weather station: "Volunteer and Forest communications guy, Duncan Campbell, has installed a Davis Weather Station on High Point.  You can check the weather at High Point right now at [the first URL below].  The weather sensors are solar powered and have a wireless system that reports to a display in the [fire lookout] cab and to a radio reporting to the Internet...pretty cool and high tech...."

The July meeting program will be presented by Marty Woll, N6VI, Assistant Director for the ARRL's Southwestern Division. Here's his description of the talk:
Prepare for the Worst - Overcoming Operating Challenges in The Gambia
Our 2003 CW Worldwide DX Contest operation at C5Z presented numerous and formidable obstacles that required a team effort to surmount. This is a case study in "making it work - no matter what" with lessons that apply as well to emergency communications as they do to contesting.

Vice-President Ron Patten, KG6HSQ, called the meeting to order at 1500.

The pledge was recited.

Ron discussed items related to the upcoming Field Day.  We will have access to the athletic field at Frazier Elementary School again this year.  Traffic to the field will be limited.  Most traffic will be held to the lower level of the school rather than on the athletic field itself.  Setup will begin Saturday morning and there will be no setup on Friday afternoon.  Tents will be the only covers available this year due to the fact that the CERT trailer is too large to move to the upper athletic field.  We will run 3 stations this year and the antenna setup will begin at 0700 Saturday morning.  Ron requested a list of equipment and will publish a list and post it on the FARC homepage or send an e-mail to members.  The potluck dinner will be Saturday afternoon at 1800.
Dates for the Field Day Activity will be June 26th and end around noon on June 27th.

Ken, W6MF, read a letter written by Mac Hanson, W9WV, offering a CushCraft R-7 that he purchased some years ago.  He asked if someone was interested to give him a call.  Mac indicated that one of the traps has been “blown” in it but should be able to be replaced.  Stephen, KC6MIE, suggested that the club contact Mac and that the club could use the antenna.
(Pick up by KG6GIU , thanks Mac for the donation to club. Editor)

Ken also informed club members that participated in the Oaks Bicycle Ride that there were Tee shirts available to those that had not collected them the day of the ride.  The shirts will be kept at the Dewey Center for those that want one.

Ken gave the following financial report

Ron reported that Milt Davies who is a local Amateur Radio operator and is on the Hospital Board of Directors had contacted him.  Milt is proposing to setup a community wide radio network including schools, buses, sheriffs department, churches and other community entities.  The system will use an existing Fire Department Repeater and frequency.  He has asked the club for assistance in installing the equipment and training staff.  Currently Milt is seeking funding for the project so there is no projected completion date for the startup at this time.  More information will be provided to FARC as the process proceeds.

Ron gave a wrap-up on the Oaks Bicycle Ride.  There were no injuries reported this year of any consequence.  Hayden, KG6YVD, has “Emergency Placards” on his vehicle and is very visible as he travels over the course.  There were many comments and thanks from the riders who saw the markings and knowing that there was assistance available if needed.  It was noted that someone had move a sign at SAG-1 (Rainbow) and riders that were to turn around at that point missed their turn and wound up on a much longer course.  Instead of turning around at SAG-1 they went south and intersected Highway 76 and had to ride 76 back to the West to Old 395, which is rather dangerous because there is no bike lane nor very good shoulder along that route.  Krissy, KR6SSY, indicated that she had seen the sign the day before but someone had removed it before the ride.

Ron reported on the wrap-up meeting with the Chamber of Commerce regarding the Avocado Festival.  He indicated that next year there would probably be another new coordinator for the event.  This year the Electrical Contractor was new and apparently had not done any preliminary surveys or studies of the layout.  He indicated that for next year’s event the Electrical Contractor would “scout out” the layout.  He said that at this meeting he did not notice anyone taking any kind of notes so we’ll have to wait to see if any of the suggestions that have been made are addresses.  He said that the Chamber of Commerce is very appreciative of the Amateur Radio Operators for all of their help with the Festival each year.

Steve, KE6GXP, told the club that there had been a recent Fire Training that was conducted by CalFire and that it had been well attended by local Amateur Radio Operators.  He also said that there would be Red Flag patrols on July 4th this year.  He does not have the details on this operation yet but says that the patrol will probably run from 1000 until about 1600.  The RACES and Lyons Peak repeaters will most likely be the backup repeaters.  Steve will keep the membership updated as he receives information from CalFire.  (Be sure to monitor the Tuesday Night ARES Net at 1900 on 146.175 to get current information.  If you are not Red Flag trained you can still be a ride-along.  The more eyes we have the better).

With no further business the meeting adjourned at 1605.

AMATEUR RADIO NEWS, SUNSPOT DISCOVERY

The 11-year sunspot cycle appears to be heavily influenced by the positions of Uranus and Neptune. This discovery makes solar cycle predictions possible and indicates that solar cycles 24 & 25 will have "heavily reduced sunspot activity" and therefore disappointing HF DX opportunities. We are currently in solar cycle 24.

RADIO RECORDS: FIRST TWO WAY CONTACT MADE ON 8.97 KHZ

What is believed to be the first Amateur Radio two-way contact on 8.97 kHz using truly radiated fields took place on Friday, June 4, 2010, between DJ2LF and DF6NM. The distance was 20.2 km.

Both DJ2LF and DF6NM were using small backyard Marconi antennas for transmit and receive. DJ2LF antenna had an estimated effective height of about 5 meters while DF6NM was at about 7 meters. Both had an effective radiated power of about five microwatts using 100 watt car radio amplifiers as transmitters. A computer and sound card with no preamplifier served each  station as a receiver.

Both stations employed a special "micro-QSO" format. This system is designed to exchange the minimum single-bit report and confirmation in only three turnovers, each containing a single dash. Station identification was by frequency alone. (DF6NM)
